Chopin en route

On 18 November 2023, the historic setting of Low Parks Museum in Hamilton became the stage for a very special musical journey. Pianist Anna Dębowska invited the audience to travel back in time and across Europe, following in the footsteps of one of the greatest Romantic composers – Frédéric Chopin.

Chopin’s life was, in many ways, a journey without rest. Born in Poland, he carried the spirit of his homeland with him as he moved through the cultural capitals of Europe: from Berlin and Vienna to the refined salons of Paris, and eventually to the welcoming atmosphere of Caledonian soil. Each of these places left a mark on his music, shaping the sound world that continues to move listeners today.

This concert paid direct homage to Chopin’s legacy by recreating the programme he performed on 28 August 1848 at the Gentlemen’s Concert Hall in Manchester, one of the highlights of his British tour arranged by his devoted supporter Jane Stirling. Through this thoughtful reconstruction, Anna Dębowska offered not only a recital of Chopin’s music, but also a living, breathing encounter with a historic evening from the composer’s own lifetime.

Anna’s performance brought out the intimacy, virtuosity and emotional depth that define Chopin’s art. The audience was invited to listen not simply as modern concertgoers, but as guests sharing in a moment that once belonged to 19th-century Britain. The echoes of that original Manchester concert, reframed in the acoustics of Low Parks Museum, created a bridge between past and present.

The warm, reflective atmosphere of the museum, combined with the 7 p.m. twilight start, made the evening feel both personal and timeless. It was more than a recital: it was a tribute to Chopin’s restless travels, his poetic spirit, and the enduring power of his music – brought to life at the keyboard by Anna Dębowska.
